October 23, 2008

I just read your story about Galveston PD getting the new boots (October 23, 2008). The story mentioned the long hours & all the hard work GPD did during the storm (IKE). Everyone appreciates all that GPD did & is still doing for their community. We appreciate their dedication, sincerity, & committment to the profession they have chosen...however....I have a question.

What about Galveston County Sheriffs Office ? They also worked long hours, double shifts, back-up generators went out, some were forced to leave & go home because they had worked so many hours that they were becoming ill. GSO has the responsibility of serving the ENTIRE COUNTY OF GALVESTON at all times, including, BOTH DURING & AFTER ANY DISASTER. Very seldom do we see where GSO is mentioned for their service to our communities.

If a survey was done, I think we would all be very surprised to be made aware of the responsibilities & committments that GSO has to our communities. Children aren't even very educated about GSO...about Deputies....who they are & what they do... Who the Sheriff is & what are his duties. They always see & HEAR about "Police Officers."

This is not to slight ANY PD....this is just to hopefully bring the GALVESTON COUNTY SHERIFFS OFFICE into the spotlight a little more often & to simply say "THANK YOU" to all GSO employees ! Susan Evans
